New turtle baby

Times Read: 641

So here is the new turtle, arrived just a bit ago via FedEX.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d107/kajuladavio/newturtle.jpg Hello new baby turtle, welcome to our home. You have a tough job ahead of you. Allow me to tell you your job description. You must entertain... everyone. Be they a child of the youngest age to an adult of the oldest age. You must be a listener and are under the strictest of confidentiality clauses. You must meld into the existing household society in such a way that you bring a smile to the face of anyone that sees you. You must torment the cats as they will never touch you, well until you are bigger, then you can chase them to your hearts content. You must be cute, this is one of the most important tasks you have.

You will be trained to walk on a yarn leash and if the need arises, you must put on the random Halloween costume and proudly be displayed in all of your glory as a teaching aid.

You are here for a specific purpose, education and companionship. We will learn of you, expanding our personal knowledge and sharing it with others. You will be our friend and cherished pet.

In return for all of this you will be loved, cherished, played with, looked after, fed and provided for. You will get fish to eat when you are older, you will have a clean habitat to live in for the rest of your life. You may out live us, if we do the right things, this we know and accept.

Welcome to the family.

The last turtle we had was a rescue turtle, from a pet store. We where told that we would never know how old he was or how long he would live. We cared for him and loved him, his passing was very hard on us all as a family. This new turtle is not a replacement pet, but an addition for our education and learning.

Pharaoh and Soldier March 2003.

Pharaoh and the new turtle, yet unnamed, summer 2009.

She forgot to tell you that you are one lucky turtle to have such a loving home. But I am sure you will learn that really well.

Quoting KO "Heh. Back when we first got Soldier, it was Pharoah who was the baby. "

My response "You're right, Pharoah was just weened and just over 8 weeks old when we got him. Soldier was probably already at least 15 at that time."

Missing it

As bed time creeps closer.. I am missing being camping already..

Have been home for about 8 hours and have had to refrain, at least 5 times, from making a fire pit in the back yard and starting up a fire.. setting the tent back up and sleeping outside..

:(

Thank goodness dad has the keys to the camp ground and I have secured permission to use said camp ground any time we want to this summer. Well as long as no other events are happening.. It will ROCK.

: blinks: that means.. : smiles sweetly: I could potentialy host my own camp out.. : ponders this.:

Memories of my youth shared...

I am back from the camping trip. We had a blast. Kids had a blast, literally.

Iaelan did great shooting for the first time but was getting to excited about being able to shoot that we had to end that portion of his camping experience before he hurt himself. Ahem. :D He then went on to do the hawk (tomahawk) and knife trail, scored 6 targets out of 20, better then his grandmother :). He kicked major butt during the scavenger hunt and was the first one done with it. O.o you would have thought it was a race or something.. Lol. He did end up killing wildlife, a field mouse, it counts... He learned how to use a flint and steel and makes lots of sparks, cant start a fire yet, but he can spark up a storm that is for sure.. Someday he will get it down and actually make a fire. Someday... :D

Wolfbite did some awesome arching with her new bow, and even taught her brother on his new bow.. Yes.. both children got bows and arrows from Grandpa "Rock Stacker" and Grandma "Mud Woman". The neighbor kids are all jealous. Wolfbite opted out of shooting for some reason but had a great time on the hawk and knife walk herself. No idea what she scored, she wont tell us. She managed to do some trading with a trader on Traders Row and got herself a leather jacket to do some bead work on. It should be interesting.

Many memories of my youth where shared with the kids. I will post some pictures after I have finished unpacking, showering and sleeping some. :D

Sounds like you all had a good time.

My turtle, my friend..

In the night we suffered a great loss in our household.

Our turtle solider pass away quietly in his tank.

There was no muss, no fuss, no noise.

He had been with us since the summer of 2003 and had provided many hours of entertainment for everyone who saw him.

People would bring him fish to eat, children would bring him grasshoppers.

Amongst his many accomplishments, yes he had them, in his life he achieved the first ever awarding of a Prize in a pet costume contest. Why is that such an accomplishment? Well let me tell you. Soldier took second place in a Dog costume contest, dressed as Herby the love bug. Why second place and not first? He would have gotten first but as we do not have a dog, there is nothing that I could have done with a $50 grooming package. His category was best dressed pet.

Another of his great accomplishments was seeing the KO family through various Deployments and tours of duty that took KO from us for lengths of time. He helped with depression and gave us someone to talk too, an unconditional ear you could say. The Soldiers that came to our home loved him and loved to interact with him.

He could be taken for a walk on a yarn leash and rush through the grass to get his run. He even chased the cats from time to time. He was a great friend and a wonderful education tool.

He was sick when we got him. He had a fungus that he contracted from poor living conditions in a pet store. His breed is a Yellow Bellied Red Ear slider turtle, aquatic. For every 5 inches of him he had to have 10 gallons of water. At the pet store he was almost 5 inches and in two inches of water. His life expectancy was 50 to 75 years. We have no idea how old he was when we got him, because I had not yet learned how fast turtles of that breed grow. At his passing he was 6 and a half inches in diameter.

He survived several moves and habitat changes. He was my friend. He was fun to watch and brought great joy to our home.

The children and I will be taking him to the local lake to be released into a designated area, so that his remains can return to nature. It is the best that we can do.

He will be severely missed.
